Pet Euthanasia: How Long Does Pet Euthanasia Take?

We know that choosing to euthanize your pet can be a very difficult decision. At Dr. 4 Pets, serving Thousand Oaks, Porter Ranch, Canoga Park, CA, and surrounding areas, we provide pet euthanasia services for owners who want their pets to spend their last days at home. Dr. Lorraine Watson can discuss the details of in-home euthanasia for your dog or cat with you, one of the most common questions we get is, “How long does it take?” So, we wanted to take a moment to answer this question.

Preparation

You don’t need to do anything to prepare other than make sure that your pet is comfortable. You may also want to decide if you want friends or family members present. Generally speaking, other pets can be in the same room if they are not too rowdy or disruptive. Otherwise, your animals should be kept in another area of the house.

Sedatives

The euthanasia process will begin with a sedative to help ease the anxiety and suffering of your pet, with a simple injection that will put your pet into a relaxed state. Dr. Lorraine Watson will prepare a small section of skin and make this injection, then wait for several minutes for it to take effect.

For pets that are very sick, comatose, or otherwise unresponsive, this step may not be necessary.

Final Injection

Once your pet is at ease, Dr. Watson will administer another injection. This time with a powerful euthanasia medication. This type of medicine will make your pet unconscious and will shut down your animal’s lungs and heart. During this time, your pet will not feel anything. The euthanasia process generally takes about thirty to sixty minutes to complete.

Sometimes, after death, animals have involuntary physical responses like twitching. Again, there is no pain involved with euthanasia, but it’s important to be prepared for this if it happens.
